Knockout: Katie Taylor’s Dublin fight gets sold out in minutes

Katie Taylor’s homecoming fight on May 20 at 3 Arena is said to have sold out just minutes after tickets went on sale to the public this morning.

Matchroom promoters have yet to officially confirm that all available tickets have been purchased.

But within minutes of ticket sales starting at 10 am, none were available on the Ticketmaster or Stage Front websites.

Hundreds of fans were disappointed at being unable to buy tickets for VIP front row seats, ranging from €80 to €1,500, reports Independent.

The other tickets were priced at €100, €140, €250, €500 and €750 each. 8,000 to 9,000 tickets are believed to have been sold.

One issue was sold to select 3 Arena and Matchroom customers on Monday and Tuesday respectively.

It was assumed that given the historic nature of the fight and Taylor’s stature in Ireland, there would be a huge demand for tickets.

It was his first professional fight on Irish soil and possibly his last, reports Independent.

The lack of tickets would inevitably focus attention on the failure of the matchroom, Croke Park and, to some extent, to deal with the government allowing the 20 May fight to go ahead at Croke Park, where 80,000 tickets would be available.

Matchrooms were prepared to sell enough of these tickets at €40 each to ensure that families could afford to travel.

But once the fight was moved inside the smaller 3 Arena, it was inevitable that the lack of tickets would drive up the price.

Taylor was originally scheduled to face Amanda Serrano on May 20 in a repeat of their memorable 19,000 sellout bout at Madison Square Garden last year, reports Independent.

However, as soon as it became clear that the fight would not take place in Croke Park, Serrano withdrew, saying that he was injured.

Taylor will now take on Chantel Cameron of England, the current undisputed and undefeated world champion at super lightweight.

Fighter Bray will bid to maintain his undefeated professional record (22-0), but if he loses, he will still retain his four world lightweight titles.

But a win and huge interest in the 20 May fixture could rekindle the idea of a stadium fixture in Ireland. However, the chances of a deal between the Matchroom and Croke Park are slim.
