Koala bears could soon be considered an endangered species

Koala bears are on the brink of being officially classified as endangered following the destruction of their habitats in the summer’s bushfires.

Australia’s Federal Environment Minister, Sussan Ley, announced on Friday that koalas were among 28 other species being considered to join the list of endangered species, the Guardian reports. The Great Glider lost nearly 30% of its habitat in the catastrophic bushfires that ravaged the country between the summer of 2019 and March 2020. Several frog and fish species are also thought to be in danger following the ‘Black Summer’.

The International Fund for Animal Welfare said that koalas on Australia’s east coast are ‘sliding towards extinction’.
