Investigators working on the disappearance and suspected murder case of schoolboy Kyran Durnin are still carefully going through the large amount of information they’ve collected – with sources saying the process “is taking time” as enquiries continue, reports The Mirror.

Kyran – who was just six when last seen in June 2022 – was officially reported missing in August 2023 alongside his mother Dayla. That report came a day after Tusla raised concerns for the child’s welfare, having failed to make contact with him despite repeated attempts.

Kyran’s mother Dayla Durnin was found safe in Ipswich, UK, just days after the missing person appeal. However, Kyran – who would now be eight years old – remains unaccounted for, reports The Mirror.

Two months later, in October 2024, Gardaí opened a murder inquiry. Officers are treating Kyran’s case as missing, presumed dead, believing he may have died nearly three years ago.

Even after two arrests and four property and land searches, Kyran’s whereabouts remain unknown, reports The Mirror.

Investigators are still going through “all information” received from the public, including data from mobile phones, electronic devices seized during searches, and content from social media, to determine when Kyran was last confirmed alive.

Gardai are said to be dealing with a “huge volume” of details and are examining it all thoroughly.

“Investigators continue to review all of the information they have and that’s taking time as there are huge volumes of information and details to go through,” a source told this paper, reports The Mirror.

Though four searches have already taken place – two late last year and two earlier this year – sources confirm “there are no immediate plans for further searches or arrests at the moment.”

“Nothing has been determined as yet for further searches,” the source added, saying the investigation is ongoing and will carry on until Kyran is found or the truth of his fate is uncovered, reports The Mirror.

Back in December, reporters from the Irish Mirror/Irish Star approached Dayla Durnin in Ipswich, while she was attending a Premier League match between Ipswich and Newcastle with a man. She was asked whether she wished to comment on Kyran’s disappearance and the ongoing public concern.

She declined to respond to questions but said: “I’d appreciate it if you would go away from me. Thank you,” reports The Mirror.

Kyran’s maternal grandmother Rhona Byrne was also approached last month and asked if she would speak about her grandson and the murder investigation.

Rhona – who was reportedly recorded saying she last saw Kyran alive on August 28 – told our reporter “Go away” when asked if she had anything to share about the search for Kyran or the case, reports The Mirror.

The first arrest in the case was made in December, when a woman in her 20s – known to Kyran – was detained on suspicion of murder.

She was released without charge. That same week, a man in his 30s was also arrested. Anthony Maguire, 36, who had a past conviction for violence, died by suicide days after his arrest, reports The Mirror.

As the case passes the six-month mark, An Garda Síochána continues to appeal to anyone with knowledge about Kyran’s disappearance or suspected murder – no matter how small the detail – to come forward.

In a statement, An Garda Siochana said: “Do not rule out any information that you may have. Please do not assume that the investigation team knows the information that you may have. Any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, will be welcomed by the investigation team. This information will be treated in the strictest confidence,” the statement said, reports The Mirror.
