After what has been described as an ‘”exceptionally successful” survey by UCD’s School of Archaeology, 40 previously unknown monuments have been discovered at Brú na Bóinne in county Meath.

The monuments were found close to the world-renowned ancient tombs at Newgrange, Dowth and Knowth.

The largest tombs at Brú na Bóinne are estimated to be well over 5,000 years old and are staggering in their size, the methods of their construction and material used as well as the fact that even today they align on certain dates, most notably the winter solstice, with the sun and stars.

The survey led by Dr Steve Davis was a joint effort by UCD School of Archaeology and the Romano-Germanic Commission, Frankfurt.

The survey is documenting links between Neolithic sites in the Boyne Valley and the Orkney Islands off the coast of Scotland.

It is thought these newly discovered monuments were also passage tombs but were constructed out of timber rather than stone.

It is thought the valley was populated from around 4,000 to 2,000 BC before being mysteriously abandoned for unknown reasons for centuries.
