Up to 400 individuals gathered for a protest in Dublin to highlight the rising cost of disability, reports RTE.
Organisers claim that Budget 2026 has dealt “a devastating blow” to disabled individuals, leaving them up to €1,400 poorer each year due to the removal of crucial support payments.
They are urging for the immediate implementation of a €400 emergency disability payment, reports RTE.
The Programme for Government has pledged to introduce a permanent annual disability support payment, and a public consultation is currently underway to determine the best course of action.
However, disability activists argue that this is merely a diversion from their urgent and pressing needs, reports RTE.
The coalition for disability, which includes the Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA), Disability Federation of Ireland (DFI), and Access for All Ireland, claims that disabled individuals are being pushed further into hardship due to the government’s delayed response.
This, they assert, has forced people to make a difficult choice between feeding themselves or keeping their homes warm, reports RTE.
They have demanded that the government, which they accuse of ableism, immediately introduce the €400 emergency payment, reports RTE.
