A large crowd of protesters has stormed the US embassy in Baghdad, after a demonstration over recent airstrikes turned violent.
Local sources say that hundreds of people had been congregating outside the embassy compound for a number of hours, to protest against deadly airstrikes that killed at least 25 fighters and wounded scores more from an Iran-backed militia group.
The mood soon turned violent, and people began pushing against the outer gate. Flames and smoke erupted shortly afterwards.
It is understood that the US ambassador was not present at the time of the incident.
