Large group of people turn out to protest possible Direct Provision Centre in Co Galway

In the region of 1,000 people have taken to Main Street in Oughterard, Co Galway, to protest against the possible opening of Direct Provision Centre in the area.

The protest comes as concerns have grown in recent weeks about the possibility of a provision centre in the region.

Although residents say they have no issues with asylum seekers, they have stated that the silent protest was held as there are not enough resources in the region to house a Direct Provision Centre.

The latest developments come after 500 people attended a local community meeting to voice their concerns.

However despite the protest, the Department of Justice have yet to confirm whether or not they are to place a centre in the region.
