According to latest figures the number of organ transplant operations were on the up last year after 266 people received life-saving procedures.

The HSE say the figures collected showed that 81 families willingly agreed to donate organs of deceased relatives, whilst a further 33 people donated a kidney to a family member.

The latest Organ Donation and Transplant Ireland report found that the total number transplants carried out in Ireland last year was the third highest on record. The report said the significant rise in figures “was assisted by the introduction of the national organ procurement service.”

The report also found that Kidney transplants increased to 120, whilst liver transplants were up to 61 from 44 in 2014. Meanwhile a new record was set for lung transplants with 36 taking place, which makes Ireland one of the highest ranked in Europe for that particular procedure.

Amazingly last year marked the first ever combined heart-lung transplant operation ever to take place here.
