The polls were accurate, Italians have elected their country’s most right-wing government since the end of World War II on Sunday. This is no small thing in a country that has had 69 governments since 1946.
The coalition, won a majority of seats in the Italian parliament, and is headed by Giorgia Meloni, leader of Fratelli d’Italia, the Brothers of Italy party.
She made history by becoming Italy’s first female prime minister.
45-yr-old Meloni grew up in a working-class district of Rome known more for cultivating left-wing activists than producing fiery far-right politicians. Her party has roots in the neo-fascist movement that emerged from the rubble of World War II.
