In a playful moment, Leo Varadkar and his partner Matthew Barrett, a cardiologist, hinted that they’ve taken the “next step” in their relationship by appearing together on a podcast, reports The Mirror.
In their first interview together, the ex-Taoiseach and Matt hinted at a new chapter in their lives by talking about how much they adore Eurovision on the Eirevision podcast.
In an interview, Matt made a joke on what constitutes a positive move in a relationship when he said, “We’re finally taking the next step in any couple’s relationship.” With a laugh, he continued, saying that joining the podcast scene was the logical next step after moving in together. Now that we’ve organised the house, it’s time to record a podcast!”
Leo, who relinquished his position as Taoiseach and Fine Gael leader early Irish year, couldn’t help but laugh at how frequently the Eurovision appeared at odd times during his political career, reports The Mirror.
He recalled one such instance, explaining, “It does come up because it’s the kind of thing you can talk about,” before launching into anecdotal remarks about the neighbour, Eurovision star Nicole, and the former leader of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU), who was once considered as a possible successor to Angela Merkel.
This quirky incident he shared happened at a conference in Bavaria. Leo said: “The person who was supposed to succeed Angela Merkel, but she had to resign the leadership, it didn’t quite work out for her – one of her neighbours was Nicole [Seibert] from Ein bichen Frieden. It was a weird thing to come up at a conference in Bavaria, you know, talking to the person who was then the leader of the CDU”, reports RSVP Live, reports The Mirror.
Varadkar also discussed Ireland’s approach to the Eurovision Song Contest, stating that he doesn’t think the Late Late Show is doing a good job of showcasing Irish Eurosong contestants. “I just think that studio one or two of the Late Late Show isn’t the place to do it,” he said. Not only does it not do credit to a pretty fantastic music, but it also features visuals that are released for the first few weeks, reports The Mirror.
