Leo Varadkar is now only a caretaker Taoiseach after he resigned in the Aras last night

Leo Varadkar is Taoiseach in name only today after he resigned from the role last night and holds a caretaker position until a new Taoiseach is elected.

Fine Gael’s Varadkar resigned as Taoiseach of Ireland and handed his resignation into President Michael D Higgins in the Aras on Thursday night.

Varadkar’s resignation came after he, Fianna Fail’s Micheal Martin, Green’s Eamon Ryan and Sinn Fein’s Mary Lou Mcdonald failed to secure 80 votes for them to become Taoiseach.

Coalition talks get underway once again to see whether a grand coalition government can be formed.

Varadkar will remain in the position as a caretaker until a new Taoiseach is elected. He is due to travel to Brussels today and possibly will still be acting Taoiseach come St Patrick’s Day where he would meet President Trump.
