Leo Varadkar slammed for saying the best option for some flood victims is to relocate

Social media users have reacted very badly to comments made by caretaker Taoiseach in relation to flood victims and those living in the worst affected areas.

Plans are in place for flood defence mechanisms, but experts say it could be up to 10 years before they’re fully implemented and working effectively.

Fine Gael’s leader Leo Varadkar has angered some local residents living near the Shannon who are badly affected by horrendous floods.

Since 2009, these people have been badly flooded five times with not much meaningful effort being made to prevent future flooding.

According ot the Irish Times, the caretaker Taoiseach said part of the solution in the future would be for people whose homes were prone to being flood should simply relocate.

The Irish Times reports that Varadkar said:
“It makes sense to spend tens of millions of euro to develop flood relief works in a town like Athlone. It would not make sense to do that just for one house. Everybody understands that. For some people, the best option is relocation.”

Some social media users living in the flooded areas said they were outraged at the so-called “solutions” being offered and demanded that the OPW make some sort of stand to prevent such horrendous flooding from occurring the future. They say that their homes and livelihoods are on the line.
