The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar spoke to RTE News today and confirmed that he will do all in his power to “get Ibrahim Halawa back to Ireland” as he desperately pleads with the Egyptian authorities to return Halawa to Ireland after his trial.
Varadkar, Ireland’s first openly gay Taoiseach, said he has scheduled a phone call with the Egyptian President on Monday, in which he will ask that Ibrahim Halawa be allowed come back to Ireland.
Halawa was jailed after being arrested for his involvement in the Muslim Brotherhood protest in Cairo in August 2013.
Reputedly Halawa destroyed his Irish passport, so the question is – how quickly will the Irish authorities issue him with a new one?
RTE News tweeted the following video showing that Varadkar will plead to get Halawa back to Ireland.
