Former Taoiseach Leo Varadkar is set to face “the ultimate test of survival and resilience” in a new RTÉ adventure series hosted by former special forces operative Ray Goggins, reports The Mirror.
Uncharted with Ray Goggins, which will premiere later this month on RTÉ One, features high-profile names from politics, music, and sport as they take on extreme expeditions in some of the world’s most remote and perilous locations.
In each episode, Ray teams up with a new celebrity pair, challenging them to endure physically and mentally demanding adventures designed to push them far beyond their comfort zones, reports The Mirror.
The opening episode of this four-part series sees Leo Varadkar join forces with Cork singer Lyra. Alongside Ray, the trio head to South Africa’s wild and remote Drakensberg mountains.
Their journey includes sleeping in caves, scaling vast peaks, and climbing sheer cliffs, all en route to one of the tallest waterfalls on Earth — Tugela Falls, reports The Mirror.
The group’s endurance is further tested when they undertake a vertigo-inducing vertical ascent of the Drakensberg Escarpment.
Later in the series, Belfast-based rap group Kneecap — known for their provocative style — face an intense five-day survival test in the Arctic, where temperatures plunge below minus 40 degrees Celsius, reports The Mirror.
Another episode features Paralympic gold medallist Ellen Keane and six-time All-Ireland Camogie champion Ashling Thompson, who head to Bolivia. There, they begin a week-long trek starting on the infamous ‘Death Road’, covering nearly 100 kilometres through dense cloud forests, turbulent rivers, and unforgiving terrain.
As they ascend into the Andean Mountains, the pair take on glaciers and snowfields as they attempt to summit a 6,088-metre peak — one of the toughest physical challenges of their lives, reports The Mirror.
The final episode features Galway hurling legend Joe Canning and Olympic track star Thomas Barr, who meet Ray in Colombia. Their task: navigate dangerous class five white-water rapids over five days.
With warnings of deadly snakes and venomous spiders, the route forces both elite athletes to draw on every ounce of strength as they attempt to return to civilisation, reports The Mirror.
