And the people affected, almost 5,000 of them, are not happy campers that their names and addresses have been sneakily given away to the utility.

All of them received a letter today, stating that the Council is ‘legally obliged” to provide Irish Water with tenants’ names and addresses, under Section 26 of the Water Services Act 2013.

The letter also specifies that the information will “only be used to make contact with those tenants who have not yet registered with them as customers”.

Anti-Austerity Alliance councillor Cian Prendeville said that himself and his colleagues have been “inundated with calls from council tenants who are outraged at the letter they received today from the council”.

Mr. Prendeville added that “At a meeting of the council last year, an AAA motion calling on the council not to pass this information onto Irish Water was passed unanimously yet the council management have decided to ignore this.”

He then dubbed the event an ‘outrage’, and encouraged people to boycott water charges.
