The Court of Appeal ruled on ex-soldier Lisa Smith’s appeal against a 15-month sentence for membership in the terrorist organization ISIS, reports RTE.
Lawyers for Smith, convicted last year at the Special Criminal Court, told the appeals court she was at the lowest level of the terrorist organization and her sentence was excessive.
However, prosecuting lawyers said that Smith had chosen to travel knowing of ISIS’s atrocities and had declined all invitations to return.
They said the verdict was fair and accounted for mitigating factors and saw Smith lose her appeal and her sentence still stands.
