Littering and dog fouling fines are going to rise by €100 to €250 from September

Fines for littering and dog fouling are set to increase by €100 from the beginning of September, reports RTE.

Minister of State for the Circular Economy Alan Dillon will announce that on-the-spot penalties will rise from €150 to €250, reports RTE.

The measure is aimed at discouraging littering and illegal dumping, with the minister also expected to urge local authorities to strengthen enforcement efforts.

Mr Dillon will also announce a €3 million funding package for anti-dumping initiatives across all councils, reports RTE.

More than 200 projects are expected to benefit from the funding this year.

The investment will support councils in deploying CCTV monitoring systems, enhancing clean-up operations and increasing public awareness campaigns, reports RTE.

Since 2017, these measures have contributed to the removal of more than 26,000 tonnes of waste across the country.

Last year, Vision Ireland reported that just 48 dog fouling fines were issued by local authorities in 2024, reports RTE.

It found that Cork County Council issued the highest number of fines with 11, while most councils issued only one or two penalties during the year.

The data also showed that almost half of local authorities, 14 in total, issued no fines for dog fouling in 2024, reports RTE.
