A swarm of locust has descended upon the Italian province of Sardinia, causing considerable damage to crops across the island.
Observers say that the swarm appeared to be’of biblical proportions’. Farmers and land owners are now counting the damage done by the insects.
Though locust invasions are not uncommon in the area, there’s a consensus that this year’s swarm is considerably larger than normal, and certainly the largest in about six decades.
When questioned about the reasons for such large swarm, scientists have postulated that a sudden rise in temperatures after a cooler than usual month of May may be to blame, as eggs laid back in August would have reached maturity in the sudden heat, and the newly born insects would feel a voracious appetite.
