“Look after our own first” – People aren’t happy with the 10,000 Irish homeless being overlooked as 100,000 Ukrainians are due to be housed in Ireland

Many people on social media have been saying that Ireland needs to look after its own homeless crisis before we can take in anymore refugees.

Alongside charity starting at home, people are saying that this influx of people will further push up rent and property prices.

As tens of thousands flood out of the Ukraine on a daily basis, Europe will be awash with refugees who are seeking accommodation.

As it stands, Ireland is due to take up to 100,000 refugees from the Ukraine, with around 500 said to be here already.

All this despite the fact that Ireland has approximately 10,000 homeless Irish people lying on park benches, sleeping in doorways and in hotel rooms around the country.

Irish people have been asked to open their doors to house some of the refugees but it’s understood that the government is considering building accommodation specifically dedicated for Ukrainian refugees on State land.

Many people are already questioning why such shelter hasn’t been built for homeless Irish people if they’re able to do it for 20,000 people who aren’t even from Ireland.
