
The Taoiseach has travelled to Canada for a one-on-one meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, reports RTE.
Their agenda is expected to include discussions on trade, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, and the situation in Gaza.
Tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump on Canadian imports have already cost Canadian businesses five billion dollars this year. The strained relationship has worsened further due to President Trump’s remarks suggesting Canada could become the 51st US state, reports RTE.
In response, Canadian consumers have begun informal boycotts of American products.
Canada is now actively seeking to offset these losses by strengthening trade ties with other countries, reports RTE.
Since Mr. Trump’s return to office, Canadian exports to the European Union have increased by 26%.
Micheál Martin has confirmed that Ireland plans to ratify the Canada-Europe Trade Agreement in the Dáil in the near future, reports RTE.
Even under its provisional application, the agreement has led to growth in trade between the two nations.
Discussions will also cover the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, with Canada playing a key role in international peacekeeping and humanitarian missions, reports RTE.
