Luiz Inácio “Lula” da Silva has defeated far right incumbent Jair Bolsonaro in a hotly contested Brazil election cycle.
Mr. Da Silva’s victory represents a stunning comeback after he was wrongly imprisoned on politically motivated charges of corruption.
Mr. Bolsonaro’s defeat also signifies a bitter disappointment for the disgraced former President Donald Trump, who had backed him due to the Brazilian’s similar autocratic values, dangerous far-right policies, and equally disastrous handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
