Madeleine McCann case: German investigators claim that Madeleine was killed in Portugal

German authorities linked to the investigation into the Madeleine McCann disappearance are claiming that the young girl was killed in Portugal.

They had initially pursued the theory that 44-year-old Christian Brueckner might have been able to smuggle the child back to his native Germany, but investigators no longer believe this is the case, and claim to be aware of evidence that Madeleine met her death in Portugal.

Brueckner is currently serving time in Germany for an unrelated crime.

Madeleine McCann vanished from the apartment where she was staying with her family in 2007, and has never been seen again. She would have turned 18 this week.
