As the investigation continues, gardai are appealing for witnesses to come forward and contact them. They’re asking for anyone who either came on the scene or was in contact with the family before the incident to get in touch with them.

Gardai now believe that the fire that killed two small kids in Westmeath was maliciously started.

They have appealed for anyone who may have witnessed anything in the area, including dashcam footage to come forward.

Gardai confirmed late last Friday that two children died in a car fire in Co Westmeath on Friday afternoon.

The alarm was sounded just before 4pm after a car with three occupants was discovered burning on a country lane in Lackan, near Multyfarnham.

GardaĆ and emergency services were alerted to join the scene.

A baby boy was taken to Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar, where he was pronounced dead.

The remains of a girl were discovered in the car at the scene. The girl’s body was removed from the scene at Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore.

An adult woman was treated for burns at the scene. She was flown to a hospital in Dublin. Her injuries are considered serious but are not considered life-threatening.

The scene has been studied by the Garda Technical Office and remains intact as gardai continue investigating.
