A new fraud that targets mobile phone users has been warned about by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), reports RTE.
Scammers pretend to be representatives of phone companies, use dishonest methods to get access to accounts, then order and take pricey mobile devices.
The con artist will call a consumer while posing as a representative of the phone company, reports RTE.
During the conversation, the fraudster utilises the cell provider’s website’s “forgot password” feature, which causes a verification code to be delivered to the target’s phone.
They will then ask the consumer to read out the code, stating it’s essential to complete an upgrade.
The fraudster resets the password and has complete access to the account once they have the code, reports RTE.
After that, they place an order for a costly phone to be delivered to the client’s home.
Once the phone is delivered, the con artist gets in touch with the victim once more and promises to fix the problem by picking up the phone and issuing a refund.
The con artist then makes arrangements for the phone to be picked up, depriving the victim of the gadget and maybe making them pay for it, reports RTE.
Verify callers, never distribute verification codes, and often monitor accounts for unauthorised activity or modifications, according to NCSC guidelines.
“Avoid using easily guessed passwords and enable additional security features, such as two-factor authentication, if available. If you receive such a call, report it to your mobile provider immediately and to your local Garda station,” the centre said, reports RTE.
It is recommended that anyone who falls for this fraud reset their account passwords and get in touch with their bank, gardaÃ, and cell provider.
