Gardaí in Co Galway have sadly confirmed that a man aged in his 70s has passed away after getting into difficulties whilst swimming off the coast of Salthill.
It is understood that the man got into difficulties whilst swimming off Blackrock Beach at approximately 1pm on Friday afternoon.
Gardaí say the man was brought to shore by a lifeboat, however despite the best efforts of emergency personnel he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
They added that his body has since been taken to Galway University Hospital where a post-mortem examination will take place.
