Denis Russell, a 59-year-old man from Donard, Co. Wicklow, was busy clearing rubbish off his land when he spotted a black bag stuck in a ditch. When he opened it, he found three valuable works of art that had been stolen in October last year.
The bag contained three framed paintings by Paul Henry, Jack B. Yeats, and Sir John Lavery.
He said that the bag appeared to have been thrown from the nearby road, but would have been visible from the field side only. According to Mr. Russell, the bag could have very easily been there for the last 10 months, as he doesn’t visit the land very often.
He contacted Gardai and the paintings were recovered. The estimated value of the paintings is about €180,000.
