Man gets jailed for driving into garda while he was trying to avoid a checkpoint on the M50

A garda who was struck by a car at a checkpoint and had severe spinal injuries said in court that the incident altered his life and prevented him from advancing in his career at a profession he loved, reports Breaking News.

On August 26, 2019, at an M50 checkpoint, the car’s driver, Charanand Flannery (25), of Hampton Wood Drive, Finglas, Dublin 11, entered a guilty plea to reckless endangerment and possession of more over €10,000 worth of cocaine.

Judge Martin Nolan deemed Flannery’s actions “unforgivable,” and on Wednesday, the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court sentenced him to five and a half years in jail, reports Breaking News.

During his reading of a victim impact statement in court, Garda David Currivan expressed gratitude to his spouse and coworkers for their support, saying he would not be here else.

Gda Currivan said in court that he was handling a separate automobile at a checkpoint on the M50 northbound at Tallaght on the relevant day due to a minor traffic infraction.

Flannery, in a black Toyota Avensis, was requested to stop behind this vehicle on the hard shoulder and wait to talk with the gardaí, reports Breaking News.
