The skeleton was found in a lying position, and the person had been wearing several jackets and other items of clothing at the time of death.
After checking dental records, authorities believe the remains belong to a 28-year-old woman who had gone missing near the house in 1977.
The woman, who has not been named, reportedly had a history of mental illness and had gone missing before.
A forensic expert said that the woman probably went to sleep in the attic and froze to death in her sleep. No foul play is suspected.
