Man who was wrongly interviewed on BBC is suing for loss of earnings

A man who became an internet sensation after being accidentally interviewed live by the BBC plans to sue the corporation for lost revenue from the clip, reports RTE.

Guy Goma showed up at the corporate headquarters for a job interview in 2006, but when he got there, he gave an interview to the BBC News channel about downloading music online.

He was mistaken for technology journalist Guy Cuney who was entrusted with a conversation about a legal dispute between Apple Corp and Apple Computer.

The blunder has been viewed more than five million times on the broadcaster’s YouTube channel, but Mr Goma said in the podcast that he did not receive any royalties from the interview.

On the Accidental Celebrities podcast, he said, “I contacted them, they didn’t answer me. Did they pay me for that interview? No. They are waiting for me to take them to the court,” reports RTE.

When asked by hosts Josh Peters and Archie Manners if he wanted to take legal action against the corporation, he replied: “I’m going to go … because of the money they made on it and they didn’t give me any single penny,” reports RTE.

Earlier on the podcast, Goma revealed how his makeup was done after arriving at the BBC studios.

He said: “I said ‘excuse me, I don’t need that, I just came for the job interview, I don’t need make-up’,” reports RTE.

In the video, he is initially surprised, but answers all questions and claims that business journalist Karen Bowerman did not realize anything was wrong.

After the interview, he told the BBC that he had interviewed the wrong person but had “no word from the broadcaster for a week”, missed the interviews and did not get the position.

The BBC declined to comment.
