A married couple residing in Dublin have been handed down substantial prison sentences after being found guilty of subjecting their daughter to genital mutilation.
The couple, a 37-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman, comes from an African country and had been living in Dublin for some time at the time of the incident. The man has been jailed for five and a half years, while the woman has been to prison for four years. They had both pleaded not guilty to the offence.
The child is now five years of age, and is being cared for by the mother’s sister.
