Trump’s recent declaration includes a 25% tariff on goods from Canada, Mexico, and a 10% levy on Chinese products, with threats of similar actions against the EU. This has sparked fears of escalating into a worldwide trade war, with Canada, Mexico, and China all promising retaliatory measures.
Martin highlighted the significant economic relationship between the U.S. and EU, describing protectionism as harmful to citizens globally, and tariffs as detrimental to economic development. He stressed that the European Union must act in unison, stating, “First of all, we have to see what happens and assess it and measure it, calibrate the impacts, and then develop our response.”
This call for caution comes at a time when the EU is also focusing on strengthening its defense capabilities, with discussions about avoiding duplication with NATO roles, the procurement of European defense equipment, and potential EU funding for defense spending being part of the agenda.
