Outgoing Tánaiste Micheál Martin has voiced his alarm about Israel’s bombing raids on Tehran over night, stating that it is time for both nations to cease their attacks and retaliation, reports RTE.

Israel attacked Iranian military installations, claiming it was retaliating for Tehran’s missile assault on Israel earlier this month. This was the most recent episode in the fiercely armed adversaries’ growing war.

Speaking in Cork, Mr. Martin stated that, for the sake of both the local population and people worldwide, the region has to de-escalate this activity quickly, reports RTE.

Mr. Martin expressed his deep worry about the situation in northern Gaza.

The Tánaiste used a top UN official’s assessment of what is occurring there as a war crime yesterday.

“It’s absolutely necessary now for a ceasefire in Gaza and in Lebanon and the release of all hostages and a massive humanitarian surge into Gaza itself and into Lebanon,” he said, reports RTE.

“All of the feedback I’m getting from northern Gaza, from the independent international agencies I met earlier this week in Paris, is that collective punishment of the people of Gaza is underway, with vicious attacks people, and there will need to be accountability for what is happening in northern Gaza, and I would call on the international community to be allowed to go into Gaza to witness first-hand what is happening there,” he added, reports RTE.

According to Taoiseach Simon Harris, he has consistently stated that Israel has the right to self-defence and the right to protect itself against terrorism.

Speaking at the annual Macra conference in Naas, County Kildare, he stated that his worries about Israel’s conduct had escalated to the point where war crimes are occurring in Gaza.

“These are not just my words or political rhetoric, it’s the view of the World Food Programme, it’s the view of the United Nations.” he stated, reports RTE.
