The Taoiseach Micheal Martin has said that housing is a top priority for the Government.

Speaking about the current homeless crisis, Martin said that the Government intends to build 50,000 social homes over its lifetime through its housing first programme.

The Taoiseach said the Government intends to be build on the programme which has already reduced homeless especially amongst single adults.

Martin added that the Government intends to invest €3.3 billion in building social and affordable homes.

The Taoiseach’s comments came after the Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald criticised the Government for persisting with policies that led to the housing crisis to begin with.

McDonald said that the issue needs to be addressed given that an entire generation are being denied the opportunity of owning a home of their own.

The Sinn Fein leader called on the Government to introduce measures that will tackle the ongoing problem of rent increases and the increase in property prices.
