Martin says no to early General Election and calls for assurances

The prospect of an early General Election is unlikely after the Fianna Fáil leader Mícheál Martin wrote to the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar calling for an agreement not to pull down the current Government.

In an open invitation for future discussions, the Fianna Fáil leader said it would be unwise to dismantle the government especially when Brexit talks are already underway.

Mr Martin who previously stated that his party would not review the current confidence and supply agreement until after the Budget, also said the Irish would be left deeply concerned if an election were to be held during Brexit negotiations.

The leader of the opposition party also claimed such a move would be dangerous and create instability.
