Micheál Martin, the Taoiseach, has stated that he does not “take too much note” of Conor McGregor’s criticism of him, reports Breaking News.
The top leaders in Ireland’s coalition have denounced the mixed martial artist for his criticism of the government on a number of subjects at a St. Patrick’s Day meeting with US President Donald Trump.
When he saw Mr. Trump in the Oval Office on Monday, McGregor called his work ethic “inspiring,” and the president called him “fantastic,” reports Breaking News.
The Dubliner informed reporters in the West Wing that when he met with Mr. Trump, he would express his worries on immigration in Ireland.
McGregor said the Irish government was one of “zero action with zero accountability.” McGregor has already declared his intention to run for Irish president, reports Breaking News.
He specifically questioned the immigration and public safety policies of Mr. Martin and his administration.
Months after he was held civilly responsible in a Dublin High Court damages case brought by a woman who accused him of rape, he made his trip to the White House, reports Breaking News.
After accusing the professional fighter of raping her in a Dublin hotel in December 2018, Nikita Hand, also known as Nikita Ní Laimhin, prevailed in her lawsuit against McGregor.
Following a three-week trial last year, the jury found Ms. Hand, 35, civilly guilty for assault and awarded damages and costs.
McGregor is contesting the civil lawsuit’s verdict, reports Breaking News.
Mr. Martin told reporters on Wednesday that elected representatives made up the government and that the mixed martial arts boxer did not speak for Ireland.
“As far as the government is concerned – it’s an elected government, by the way – and we’re very focused on increasing the policing in the public order capacity. But I don’t take too much note of his criticism other than to say that he does not speak for for the Irish people in any shape or form. And we will continue to work in Dail Eireann and in engaging with the opposition in Dáil Éireann who are elected also. And we will engage in terms of the best policies to develop for this country into the future,” reports Breaking News.
