Tributes have been paid to a talented young footballer following his sudden passing earlier this week, reports The Mirror.

Shea Haughey, who was just 12 and lived in College Gardens in Newry, died at home on Monday, March 23, reports The Mirror.

The local community has been left shocked and deeply saddened by the boy’s death. A death notice described him as the beloved son of Claire and David, a devoted brother to Rebecca and Evie, and a treasured grandson of Mary and Martin (Keenan) and Vera and David (Haughey).

A Year 8 pupil at St Joseph’s High School, he excelled in sport, representing Ballyholland Harps GAC and Midway United FC Newry, reports The Mirror.

Paying tribute, the GAA club shared an image of Shea alongside his teammates at an underage awards event held last October.

A club spokesperson said: “It is with the deepest and most heartfelt sadness that we have learned of the passing of our much-loved underage player, Shea Haughey, reports The Mirror.

“Everyone at Ballyholland Harps GAC extends our sincere condolences, love, and prayers to Davy, Clare, Rebecca, Evie and the entire family circle at this incredibly difficult time.

“Shea will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. His coaches spoke of him as one of the warmest, kindest, and most genuine young men they ever had the privilege to coach – always smiling, always a pleasure to be around, and a true credit to his family and club”, reports The Mirror.

They added: “Our thoughts and prayers are with Shea’s family, friends, and teammates. Please know that as a club, we stand with you and are here for you in any way we can.

As a mark of respect, the club has cancelled all Under-14 football activities until further notice, reports The Mirror.

In its tribute to its Under-14 goalkeeper, Midway United FC said: “Shea was a valued member of our club and a much-loved teammate and friend. His presence, spirit, and love for the game will never be forgotten, and he will always remain a part of the Midway United family.

“At this incredibly difficult time, our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Shea’s family, friends, and teammates. We ask that the family’s privacy is respected as they come to terms with this devastating loss”, reports The Mirror.
