Alice Cairns, mother of missing schoolboy Philip Cairns, has passed away, reports RTE.

Philip was 13 when he disappeared on 23 October 1986 while returning to Coláiste Éanna in Rathfarnham, Dublin, where he was a first-year student, reports RTE.

It’s been announced today that Alice Cairns sadly died on Tuesday.

The mother of six had been predeceased by her husband, Philip, in 2014, reports RTE.

Six days after Philip went missing, his schoolbag was discovered in a laneway just metres from his home on Ballyroan Road in Rathfarnham.

Some of the books from his bag were missing, reports RTE.

In 2016, Ms Cairns spoke to RTÉ’s Today with Sean O’Rourke, saying she felt “robbed of her son” and that he was robbed of a future.

She added that she needed to find her own peace and that “you have to forgive,” reports RTE.

On the 20th anniversary of Philip’s disappearance, his brother Eoin reflected on the impact on their parents and sisters.

“Philip is always there in the sense that he is not there. At Christmas, birthdays, weddings and other family occasions we think of how Philip should be with us,” he said, reports RTE.

Gardaí in Rathfarnham have issued multiple appeals over the years regarding Philip’s disappearance.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact Rathfarnham Garda Station on 01 6666500 or the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, reports RTE.
