David Prowse, the actor who portrayed the iconic Star Wars character Darth Vader, has died aged 85.

A Bristol native, Prowse had a sporting career as a weightlifter and bodybuilder before turning to acting. He was well known in Britain as the Green Cross Code Man, a fictional superhero that promoted road safety for children.

Prowse appeared in A Clockwork Orange in 1971, where his imposing physical appearance was noticed by future Star Wars director George Lucas. Prowse was cast as Luke Skywalker’s antagonist Darth Vader in 1977, and had his voice dubbed by American actor James Earl Jones due to Prowse’s West Country accent.

The actor retired from public life in 2016 due to poor health. He passed away on Saturday following a short illness.
