McEntee is considering raising the age of retirement for the gardai

The Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee, stated that there are no limits when it comes to the recruitment and retention of gardaí.

She made this statement in response to the recently raised age limit of 50 for applying to the gardaí.

“I want to change it, and I’m in discussions with the Minister for Public Expenditure. We haven’t reached a conclusion, but that is where I hope to get,” reports Breaking News.

She is currently in talks with the Minister for Public Expenditure regarding this matter.

However, Ms McEntee acknowledged that the age limit change for recruits will come with challenges, as training a garda can take up to two years for them to be considered proficient.

“Everybody will still have to do a fitness test,” she said, reports Breaking News.

“Our population is growing, we need to see that the garda workforce grows with it. Nothing is off the table to support the gardaí and the work they are doing. It’s my job to support them in every way that we can,” she added, reports Breaking News.
