McEntee says a high visibility garda presence will remain in Dublin for the foreseeable future

The Minister for Justice has stated that the noticeable garda presence that has been present in Dublin’s city core for the past several months will continue, reports RTE.

It comes as The Irish Times revealed that Minister Helen McEntee’s announcement last summer of an additional €10 million for garda overtime in Dublin is currently being expended.

Following November rioting in the city and an incident near a Parnell Square East school that left a woman and three children injured, there was an increased garda presence.

A five-year-old girl has been hospitalised since the attack on November 23, reports RTE.

Major disruption was caused in the capital as a demonstration that had started close to the attack location got out of control.

The minister said: “The overtime budget for this year has actually increased by €28m and I have no doubt that a significant portion of that will go to Dublin,” reports RTE.

“But whatever resources are needed to make sure that that high visibility presence that we have had for the last number of weeks and months, that that is maintained, I have been assured that that will be the case,” he added, reports RTE.
