McEntee slammed as domestic violence protection applications in Ireland increase 25% in five years




The most recent statistics released by the Courts Service show that throughout the past five years, there has been a 25% rise in the number of applications for domestic violence protection, reports RTE.

The number of applications for protection orders against domestic abuse rose by almost 2,000 in the previous year, totalling 25,570.

According to the Courts Service’s 2023 annual report, the number of lawsuits contesting asylum-related rulings jumped by 132% in the previous year.

336 lawsuits contesting judgements on the granting of asylum were filed in 2022. This climbed by 132% to 779 the previous year, reports RTE.

The amount of instances involving narcotics, theft, violence, public order violations, traffic violations, and sexual offences has decreased, nevertheless.

According to the study, there were over 500,000 new cases filed with the courts in the previous year.

Supreme Court Judge Elizabeth Dunne, who chairs the Board of the Courts Service, described the study as a “snapshot” of the court’s operations, reports RTE.

According to Judge Dunne, waiting times had decreased and the number of cases concluded had increased. More judges, she claimed, together with system modernisation, were bringing about “great changes” for everyone involved in the legal system.

The Central Criminal Court handles the most serious criminal acts, and the report displays the number of cases that have been resolved there, reports RTE.

The Circuit Criminal Court had a 5% rise in cases that were resolved.

Additionally, according to the agency, fewer significant offences are committed each year.

It also reveals that 62% of the 539 rape cases that were decided last year had sentences of ten years or longer, with the possibility of life in jail, reports RTE.

A total of over €257 million was granted in personal injury claims in the civil courts. This was comparable to 2022 in many ways.

The largest award, at €20.5 million, was little more than €1,000, reports RTE.

Cases of medical malpractice made up little more than €167 million of the total.

The number of injunctions requested in the high court increased significantly last year, from 188 in 2022 to 326, reports RTE.
