McEntee to introduce measures to stem rising number of migrants coming into Ireland

The Minister of Justice intends to propose more steps to curb the growing quantity of individuals requesting international protection, reports RTE.

Helen McEntee will inform her colleagues in the Cabinet that, starting this morning, applicants for international protection from the countries with the greatest number of arrivals during the preceding three months would begin what is known as an expedited procedure.

They will receive a decision on their claims under that process in ninety days.

Nigerian citizens will currently be eligible for this expedited procedure, reports RTE.

Over 2,000 Nigerians have applied for asylum in this nation since the year’s commencement, making up one-third of all applications for international protection this year.

The International Protections Act is the reason behind Ms. McEntee’s action. Every three months, the top-ranked nation from the previous three months will be evaluated, reports RTE.

She is supposed to inform the Cabinet that expedited processing is effective in providing prompt protection to those in need while warning those not in need of the dangers associated with pursuing asylum.

According to Minister McEntee, the fact that applications from countries classified as “safe” have decreased by 50% since fast processing was instituted for them is unmistakable proof that individuals who may be travelling to Ireland for economic purposes but do not require protection are realising it is not worth taking the chance of being turned down and facing deportation, reports RTE.
