The Cabinet will take into consideration a new proposal that would allow holders of medical cards to earn money through the “rent-a-room scheme” without affecting their eligibility for the card.
According to RTE, Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly is requesting ministerial approval for the idea, which offers a €14,000 annual rental income disregard from medical card assessment.
Medical card holders and applicants may earn up to €1,166 per month under the Health Miscellaneous Provisions Bill 2024, without such income being deducted when applying for medical cards.
RTE reports that it is anticipated that Mr. Donnelly will characterise the plan as a significant stride towards the government’s objective of supplying more housing to ease the shortage of residential rental units.
Minister Donnelly aims to get the legislation through the Oireachtas before the summer if the Cabinet supports the plans.
