MEPs want the seasonal clock changes to be scrapped – summer time to remain all year round

The European Commission has being urged to do away with the biannual clock change by a group of MEPs from different parties, reports RTE.

On Sunday at 2 a.m., clocks are scheduled to move back one hour.

However, MEPs contend that the present clock-changing practice, which occurs twice a year, is “outdated and poses well-documented risks to health, safety, and overall well-being” in a letter to the president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, reports RTE.

The letter, authored by Irish MEP Seán Kelly, has been signed by 67 MEPs from various parliamentary factions.

According to the letter, the clock change may “increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes, negatively impact sleep patterns, and lead to a spike in traffic accidents.”

In 2019, the European Parliament endorsed a proposal to enable member states to stop using time change. However, the European Council, which is made up of member states, never signed the proposal, hence it never became legislation, reports RTE.

Ursula van der Leyen has been implored by Seán Kelly to return the topic of the biannual clock change “to the political agenda for the upcoming parliamentary term.”

In order to utilise natural light, member nations are currently obligated by law to change the clocks twice a year, reports RTE.
