Met Eireann claims there’ll be accumulations of snow over five-day snow and ice onslaught

As winter hits Ireland hard this week, Met Éireann has predicted at least five days in a row with below-freezing temperatures and snow and sleet showers, reports The Mirror.

Beginning on Monday, November 18, the national forecaster will be issuing an alert warning that “wintry hazards including frost and ice are likely with potential for sleet, snow, and hail for some.”

Met Éireann’s daily forecast for the coming week, which describes the extent of the wintry conditions from Monday through Friday and possibly beyond, goes into greater detail about the nature of those conditions, reports The Mirror.

Sunday night will mark the start of the cold snap, with Ulster seeing freezing temperatures following a generally pleasant day with highs of 7 to 11 degrees across the country.

Monday will be a rainy day with heavy rain that starts in the afternoon and spreads over the nation, causing spot flooding in some areas and transitioning to sleet and snow in others, mostly in Ulster and on high elevation. There’s also a risk that it will fall in the west. Temperatures may dip to as low as -2 in some locations on Monday night.

Tuesday is predicted to bring hail, sleet, and snow to the north and west once more, though any storms that do occur will probably be sporadic rather than continuous, reports The Mirror.

It’s a similar story on Thursday, which is set to be dry and cold with patches of frost and ice likely as temperatures dip to below freezing approaching Thursday night. Once more, the west and north of the country are most at risk of wintry showers.

Friday is currently looking milder than the rest of the week but Met Éireann says its confidence in the forecast decreases markedly into the weekend, with either an “abrupt change” bringing milder conditions or a continuation of the cold snap both on the table at this stage, reports The Mirror.

Met Éireann has issued a warning that “accumulations” of snow are likely to occur on higher land, however they are not the only possibility.

With lows of -2 degrees on Tuesday night, the weather will remain chilly into Wednesday morning, with frost and ice taking a while to melt in protected spots. Although Wednesday is expected to be clearer than Monday and Tuesday, snowy showers are still expected to extend to other parts of the nation from the north and west, reports The Mirror.
