Met Eireann: Get ready for it – temperatures to plummet to -3c as country braces for bitterly cold end to 2025

Met Éireann has warned that Ireland is set for a sharply cold end to the year, with temperatures expected to drop well below freezing over the coming days.

While conditions are forecast to remain largely dry next week as people head out to celebrate New Year’s Eve, revellers are being advised to wrap up warm, with temperatures likely to dip to -3C, reports The Mirror.

According to Met Éireann’s latest outlook, today will be fairly cloudy but mostly dry, although there will be some patches of drizzle near southern coastal areas.

Tonight is expected to be mostly cloudy and dry, with a chance of isolated drizzle, mainly across eastern and southern parts. Lowest temperatures of between 0C and 4C are forecast, though it will be slightly milder near some eastern coasts, with light northeast or variable winds, reports The Mirror.

Monday will remain largely dry and cloudy, with occasional patches of light rain or drizzle. Brighter conditions are expected in Ulster and north Connacht, which will see some sunny spells, with maximum temperatures ranging from 3C to 7C in a light to moderate northeast breeze.

Conditions on Monday night will be generally dry and cloudy, with clearer spells mainly in northern and western areas, while isolated drizzle will persist in the east and south, reports The Mirror.

Met Éireann said it will turn cold under clear skies, with frost developing and lowest temperatures of between -1C and 2C in the north and west. Elsewhere, it will be less cold, with lows of 2C to 6C and light to moderate northeast winds.

The forecaster said Tuesday will start cloudy, but brighter or sunny spells will develop through the day away from eastern and southern regions, reports The Mirror.

Most areas will stay dry, though there may be the odd spot of drizzle in the south and east. Highest temperatures will range from around 3C in the north to 8C in the south, with light to moderate northeast winds.

Met Éireann warned that Tuesday night will be cold and dry, with clear spells and widespread frost forming. Some fog or freezing fog is also expected in light easterly or variable breezes, with lowest temperatures of -3C to 1C, reports The Mirror.

Looking ahead to New Year’s Eve, Met Éireann said it will be “a frosty start to the last day of 2025,” with fog or freezing fog slow to clear, reports The Mirror.

Those heading out to welcome the new year can expect dry conditions with sunny spells, but it will remain cold, with daytime temperatures of just 2C to 6C in a light variable breeze.

The start of 2026 on Thursday will be cloudier, with scattered patches of light rain and drizzle spreading southwards from the north, reports The Mirror.

After a cold beginning to the day, conditions will turn slightly milder than recent days, with highest temperatures of between 5C and 9C in moderate westerly winds.
