Met Eireann issue Status Orange thunderstorm warning for nine counties after heavy flooding in Kerry

A storm and rain warning has been issued for nine counties in Status Orange, with possible flash flooding and power outages.

The warning for Cavan, Clare, Connacht, Longford, and Westmeath came into effect from this afternoon and is valid until at least midnight.

Met Eireann says storms and very heavy rainfall will cause significant build-up in the short term, reports RTE.

A separate yellow storm and rain warning is in effect for Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Louth, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary and Connacht, report RTE.

Met Eireann says the storms will bring frequent lightning, torrential downpours, gusty winds and the possibility of hail from this afternoon, leading to severe travel conditions and possible localized flooding.

The temperature will be between 18 and 22 degrees Celsius.

The British Met Office has issued similar yellow storm conditions warnings for Fermanagh, Tyrone and Derry. This warning is in effect from 14:00 to 21:00, reports RTE.

The UK office says scattered storms could cause flooding and disruption.
