Met Eireann warns Christmas shoppers will face heavy rain, strong wing and pockets of thunder as white Christmas goes out the window

Last-minute Christmas shoppers are set to face heavy rain and thunderstorms, according to weather officials.

Met Éireann predicts a mainly dry day today, aside from some showers along Atlantic coastal counties, but has warned of downpours on Wednesday, reports The Mirror.

The forecast worsens for Thursday, with “persistent rain” expected and the possibility of thunderstorms moving in.

“Highest afternoon temperatures of 4 to 9 degrees, with mostly light southwesterly breezes,” the forecasters added, reports The Mirror.

They explained: “Outbreaks of rain and drizzle will become patchier as they clear eastwards through the morning and afternoon, with a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers following from the west.

“Milder than the previous two days with highest afternoon temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees. While winds will ease through the morning, it will remain breezy with moderate to fresh southwesterly winds, stronger on western and northwestern coasts,” reports The Mirror.

A Met Éireann meteorologist said: “While the details are still uncertain, Thursday will bring some wet and windy weather. Persistent rain, heavy at times, will affect parts in the morning and afternoon.

“As this clears eastwards, showers will feed in from the Atlantic, some of which will be heavy and with a risk of hail or isolated thunderstorms.

“Highest afternoon temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees. Moderate to fresh southerly winds will veer southwesterly and increase fresh to strong, with gales possible on some western coasts,” reports The Mirror.

Meanwhile, Ireland could see snowfall on Christmas Day, with Ladbrokes slashing odds from 4/1 to 2/1 for snow to fall across the country this year, reports The Mirror.

Nicola McGeady of Ladbrokes said: “It looking increasingly likely that we could be wrapped in a blanket of snow on the 25th, an ideal forecast for the festive season!”
