Migrant (31) has been charged over €50,000 jewellery theft in Dublin city

A man in his 30s has been remanded in custody after being accused of stealing jewellery valued at approximately €50,000 from a store on Kildare Street in Dublin city centre, reports RTE.

Ionut Firica, 31, from Romania, was arrested yesterday morning and appeared before Dublin District Court today.

Defence counsel Sam Friel informed Judge Catherine Ghent that his client “is only in the country five days” and would be deferring a bail application, reports RTE.

Mr Firica, who has been using an address on George’s Street in Dublin, is charged with entering Bespoke Diamonds on Kildare Street, Dublin 2, as a trespasser with the intention to commit theft on 25 April.

Garda Niamh Dunne told Judge Ghent that the man was arrested at St Stephen’s Green during the early hours of yesterday morning, taken to Pearse Street Garda Station, and “made no reply” when charged, reports RTE.

Gda Dunne added that she would be objecting to his bail.

The accused, who has not yet entered a plea, followed the proceedings with the assistance of an interpreter and remained silent throughout the hearing.

Mr Friel BL, under instruction from solicitor Stephen O’Mahony, stated to Judge Ghent that his client was not seeking bail at this point, reports RTE.

Mr Firica was remanded in custody to appear at Cloverhill District Court on 2 May, and an interpreter has been arranged for the next hearing.

Legal aid was granted to Mr Firica.

He had been detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 for questioning until he was charged last night and subsequently held pending today’s court appearance, reports RTE.

Gardaí closed off St Stephen’s Green Park to conduct a daylight search, and around 6am, they found a bag and recovered the jewellery.

The charge brought against Mr Firica falls under section 12 of the Theft and Fraud Act, reports RTE.
