A 36-yr-old man named Niall Cummins, from The Willows in Clarinwood, Tramore, appeared in Waterford District Court on charges linked to the stabbing of a woman in her fifties. The attack happened yesterday morning as she was praying the rosary ahead of 10am Mass at Holy Cross Church in Summerhill, Tramore.
Emergency services were called around 9:45am, and several Garda units responded to the scene. The woman was taken to University Hospital Waterford for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Sergeant Robert Flynn told the court that Cummins made no reply when arrested and cautioned. He faces a charge of assault causing harm under section 3.
Cummins appeared briefly before Judge John Cheatle without a solicitor and indicated he was reserving his position on bail. When the judge directly asked if he was applying for bail, he replied that he was “not really.”
The case was adjourned until Monday, when Cummins is due to appear again via video link. The prosecution is expected to oppose any bail application, and the judge ordered a psychiatric assessment for the accused.
